Welcome to WIPMADNESS 2013 Week 1 Check-In

Welcome to the 2013 WIPMADNESS!

Are we excited?

I’m excited.

Good things are happening amongst the Wipsters this year. Some of us have books coming out, some hope to have books coming out, and some of us are writing books that will be sold and will come out!

Now I’d like to take a moment to give a shout out to a new follower who posted the most awesome review of my blog here. Welcome DaniDuck! I hope she’ll hang out with us Wipsters.

This month I’m going to do some author interviews and book giveaways, but for my special WIPMADNESS peeps, each week I’m going to send one of you commenters something very personal, something I rarely share.

Here’s a hint: ♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫

So now let’s get down to business. This month’s goals. I have two writing related goals this month. One is to plow ahead with the revisions of a couple of YA novels, one contemp and one historical. And I have another exciting writerly goal. It has to do with SCBWI and it has to do with a Northern Arizona network. That’s all I’m saying for now.

So, Wipsters, what are ya’ll gonna accomplish this month?

  1. Thanks for hosting this month, Angelina!

I'm working on a rewrite and my goal for January is to write an hour every day. I'm not assigning myself a specific word count or a particular number of pages. I just want to write, even if I'm tired or cranky or not in the mood.

That goal is so far, so good this month :)

    Good luck to everyone!

  2. Hi Angelina! Thanks for hosting - and how great to have a new network of writers in your new home.

My goals are to keep working on first pass revisions to POPSICLE and wait on my edit letter for SING. When that comes, that's where my focus will be. So nervous and excited about it.

Also doing some beta'ing (prior to edit letter) for a couple of CP's.

    Happy 2013!

  3. Oooh! I can't wait to hear more, Angelina!

I'm hoping to iron out the general plot and scope of my new WIP and complete at last the first two chapters. I'm about 1500 words in, but still working through a lot of pre-writing stuff. Had a wonderful epiphany over the weekend (seems fitting!) and I hope that will launch me into some truly wild wip madness!

    Happy New Year!

I'm with you in hoping for some "truly wild wip madness". Here's to creating with wild abandon!

  4. So good to hear you're up and writing, Angelina! Awesome news that your area of Arizona has a writing network. I love my SCBWI group. They hold me accountable and keep me motivated. Thanks so much for hosting wipmadness this month!

My writerly goals this month are to work on edits with my agent with a picture book. I'm totally excited about it and I look forward to seeing where this book takes us! Her (our) goal is to begin subb'ing it to publishers this month some time.

Since the pb is character-driven, I've been studying other successful character-driven picture books to see what it is that makes them special. I'd like to apply my findings into this pb and possibly another book with the same character. So major brainstorming going on. :)

I'm also currently drafting a YA supernatural mystery. I'm about 15k into the story so far. I'm excited about this one, as it's a new spin on the supernatural world. So that's where I'll be whipping up some madness.

I look forward to hearing everyone else's goals this month. Write on, wipsters!

  5. Yaaaay, Angelina! I'm so glad to see you back at it. Thanks so much for hosting. I'm definitely intrigued by the music.

I have a kind of crazy goal to finish my big revision on my Icelandic WIP this month so I can get it out to my first round betas in February. It took me like two months to do the first three chapters, but once I got them how they needed to be, I've been zipping through the rest of the beginning and am now solidly in the middle, so it seems possible.

I would LOVE to get some good news about my in-the-trenches ms this month, so I'd welcome any extra vibes anyone has lying around. I've gotten a few more rejections on the full, but this last round definitely make it sound like a personal taste issue and not anything actually WRONG with the ms (yaaay, last round of revisions), so I am still filled with crazy, stupid hope.

Wishing everyone a wonderful and productive month!
    Kip

  6. I'm joining!

My goal is to have a solid 4-5 opening chapters drafted. Not sure what that'll end up being wordcount-wise. Weirdly, Jan/Feb is always a productive time for me. Must be there's nothing else to do in the winter. Might as well do some writing while I'm shivering through the end of winter.

Glad you're back at work. *gives secret hand shake that only we two know*

  7. I'm working on the 4th draft of Angel Eyes, my YA SF novel. I'm working on fixes for my three beta readers' comments, and making sure my character arcs are solidly in place. Hoping to be done by month's end!

  8. I'm about a third of the way through a revision I hope to finish this month.

  9. Yay, for hosting!

I'm working on like my 7th draft of EL COMPUESTO. Pulling out the dystopian backdrop and instead concentrating on having it more set in a cult-like environment in the desert. I'm using my own religious background on this one. Still having the Sci-fi elements though.

I'm still not sure on status of NO GODDESSES and need to contact publisher again. It should be out in a few.

I'm going to a plotting workshop on the 19th with Lou Nelson, my former UCI writing professor. I'm excited as I love her workshops and it'll help me with this revision too. I'm also probably going to a RWA conference in March.

Busy year! Hope it'll be successful one too as one of my goals is to get my revision polished so I can have Betas read it before, gulp, I send it off to agents...again. The other part of this goal is I give myself permission to not get too down when the rejections start coming in but rather learn from them.

  10. Hi!!

This month I'm going to keep editing for voice. I have the story, I have the characters, I have the setting. There are parts of my MS that sing to me and parts that make me cringe. I'm going to even it up, iron it out, allow myself to laugh at what I don't like then let it go, to make room for what is coming.

  11. Happy New Year to everyone! And thanks for hosting this month, Angelina. The music giveaway clue is intriguing. :) Although it's already January 7th, my writing year is off to a slow start. First priority today: initiating my 2013 daybook and finishing the post-Christmas cleanup. *Then* I think I can focus on the writing. I have a rewrite to finish, hopefully in time to enter it in the Genesis contest (deadline mid-March) so at least I have a goal in mind.

Hope everyone has a good week!

  12. I would like to finally finish this novel!!!! The holidays put a giant roadblock in my writing habits, so here's to the new year, school back in session, and husband back to work so I can return to my writing routine! If nothing else in the month of January, I'd at least like to get three or four new chapters added.

    1. Getting back into the routine is the toughest part for me. Yes we can!

  13. Amen, Angelina!

I am agonizing over the last few pages of revisions for Sign of the Star. It's the last chapter, which is basically the epilogue without being called the epilogue (since that's the in thing right now) and I'm trying to get it right, trying to make it less infodumpy and more actiony.

Once I finish that, then I'm done revisions! Er, sort of. One last read-through from my critique partner then I'll send it off. And I am *so* ready to be done with this.

Hope to do other stuff too, like beta-read and work on other projects, but this really has been my focus right now.

  14. Yay for the music!! Y'all are in for a treat. =)

My goal is massive drafting. My research is pretty much done, except for tidbits I run into here and there. So drafting, drafting, drafting. The end of my unemployment time looms large and I feel terrified to go back to a dead-end office job. So trying to make the absolute most of my time!

  15. Yay! Back on Angelina's blog! Sounds like you have lots lined up for the month. I'm busy revising, revising, and more revising. I've just sent PA to another beta reader. Just got notes back on FE and my new nonfiction book, so I will busily revising those this month, plus getting ready for a promotion I'll be doing in February, a grant I want to apply for, and gearing up for March Madness! Whew.

  16. Sounds like it's going to be another great month of wipmadness! Thanks for hosting, Angelina. :)

I'm just starting a complete re-write of a YA novel I really want to love (but it isn't there yet...but maybe it can be!). I have hope for this story, and I'm excited about having another go at it. So, my wipmadness goal this month is to PUT WORDS ON PAPER! I know...crazy, right? LOL

    ReplyDelete
  17. Fall in love with it again, Shari. ^_^

  18. Thanks for getting us off to our #wipmadness 2013 start! Go, go, go on those goals of yours!

Mine are-revise and submit a picture book to my crit group/write first draft of new pb idea/figure out what the heck I am doing with my mg novel.....

    GoooOOoooo Wipsters!

  19. I vomited all my goals on my blog yesterday, but basically it's finishing my current draft (2 more chapters!) and then TONS of revising. Three MSs to revise, to be exact! I'll be exhausting all my CPs, that's for sure...

    ReplyDelete
  20. I hope everyone has a fantastic 2013 and that they charge ahead with their writing goals.

  21. Oh! what a surprise! I'm late to the WIP party! This is so unlike me (HEAVY SARCASM)
    Thanks for hosting, Angelina.
putting my goal up for January seems like a cheat since I'm through most of the month, but here goes:
I want to resolve the extremely sloppy ending of my WIP. I finished the first draft on 12/31/12 but was so unhappy with the ending (PASSIVE!) that it would not leave me alone. Am spending January wrestling with it. Imagine me wearing a Lucha Libre Mask and a bathing suit and you'll have a good idea of the spectacle that this is. STILL! I WILL WIN!
