The Most Interesting Thing: It's Not About Me

ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Okay, so really, it's not all about me. But that's how I'm feeling right now as I try to go about putting the word out about Ace's debut novel. If you know me, you know I've spent years promoting other people's books. It's what I love to do. But now I need to spread the word about my own book and it's uncomfortable and awkward and I feel like a pushy used car salesperson. I'm struggling to figure out a way to do this that doesn't seem so ucky wuck. This week I came to a liberating conclusion:
The best way to promote my book is to keep doing what I love to do--promote and encourage others!

So my dear peeps,  what are your thoughts on the subject of self-promotion?

  1. I struggle with this one, too. I don't like the 'hey, buy my book' aspect of it.

I think the best thing is to start a conversation and let it come up naturally. I know I'm more likely to buy then :-)

    1. Yes. I think it's best for me to just let Ace be himself. Which is dangerous, but at least he makes people laugh.

  2. I think it's all about forming relationships, as many as we can. Promoting others is part of that. If we can honestly help others, and come across as "real people," others will help us too when the time comes. But when ALL you see of a person is their commercials, ugh.

    1. Yep. I just tune it out when all a person tweets is BUY MY BOOK.

  3. I like what Marcia said! Be real and people want to help you.
Speaking of - Ace traveled to Asheville yesterday where he landed in the kids room at the big public library AND at my favorite burrito stop which has a table for customer's postcards, etc. Lots of kids eat there, and in an area of town where folks are likely to have e-readers.

  4. Ugh, I'm probably the worst one to offer you advice on this. LITTLE ACORN came out last October, and I kind of sucked promoting it. Actually, I really sucked at promoting it. Poor Little A.

But, I believe your Ace is the key to promoting J.C.B. He's a riot. I don't think I'll ever get tired of seeing his tweets or FB posts. I miss some because I've been only allowing myself snippets of social media time, but I still think it's a great promotional tool.

    1. Thanks, Candy. Ace is loads of fun. He can do and say what I cannot. ^_^

  5. I hear ya on this! I hate promoting myself--I feel like such a poser sometimes :) Not that I'm being fake, just I don't like talking about myself. I definitely agree that focusing on other writers really helps, and builds all kinds of fun relationships!
