October Wipmadness Check-In: Week 3

Dorothy Day

Today I'm thinking about food. I woke up hungry. Over these past months I haven't had much of an appetite. Haven't been eating enough. But I'm working on that. This is also true about feeding my book-loving soul.

I used to eat three or four novels a week. I had an insatiable appetite for fiction. But ever since my life turned upside down, I've barely read three novels a month. And I live across the street from a huge library!!!

Wipsters, help me get my appetite for books back. Tell me what books I absolutely MUST READ!

Now, as regards this past week of activity, I hope you all enjoyed a measure of success. Tell me what book-related stuff you did and what you hope to do this week. I doubled my goal--revised six chapters last week. I hope to revise another six this week.

So, goals? Must-read books? Tell us all about them. ^_^

  1. For middle-grade have you read "When You Reach Me" by Rebecca Stead? It's amazing. Also, I really enjoyed "The Candymakers" and anything by Kate DiCamillo. Hope you get out of this funk soon!

    2. I second WHEN YOU REACH ME, and anything by Kate DiCamillo -- I just read FLORA & ULYSSES this week & was utterly charmed. Also recently read and loved WONDER, by R.J. Palacio. Also, HOME OF THE BRAVE by Katherine Applegate (MG verse novel) .YA-wise, everything by A.S. King (REALITY BOY is out this week...yay!).

  3. I wish I could jog over and feed both your body and soul, but I'll have to settle for the soul. I just read Veronica Roth's Divergent and I'm eager to dive into the second one. Kim Sabatini's Touching the Surface is lovely. For a real MG escape, The True Meaning of Smek Day is fabulous.

As for my writerly week, I just returned from my second retreat to the woods, this time in North Carolina. There were 8 of us, and it was perfection. I shared a little bit on my BLOG. There was lots of inspiration, many epiphanies, and tremendous talent that really helped me break through a bit of a block.

Here's to some awesome writing inspiration and books to feed the soul!

  4. Wow, six chapters! Way to go, Angelina! Good luck with it again this week. :)

I mostly dabbled with revision notes. Did some prep for the conference (which is this coming weekend...so excited!). Read a couple MG books. Goals for this week -- just a bit more revision brainstorming/note-taking, and then Thursday I'm off to Surrey.

    Have a great week, everyone!

    1. Been achy these last few days. Ugh. Been reading THE WAKING DARK by Robin Wasserman which is reminding me so much of Stephen King. Creepy, suspenseful and totally loving it! I don't read MG per say though son is. He's really loving Greg Pincus's book 14 Fibs of Gregory K: http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/the-14-fibs-of-gregory-k-greg-pincus/1114596996?ean=9780439912990

Been working on a short story for a YARWA on-line class and starting to read some of the YA Nonfiction Cybil's nominated books! **Love being a panelist for the Cybils!

  5. I'm finally back at home and trying to get my act together for this weekend's Surrey Conference. All this coming and going! Looking forward to the conference, but I don't have all the revisions completed as I'd hoped, so these next few days are devoted to them. Your six chapters inspire me! :)

Just finished reading two of Hollie Ephron's books which I'd recommend if you were looking for something non-YA: THERE WAS AN OLD WOMAN and NEVER TELL A LIE are excellent cosy mysteries.

  6. As usual I'm late. I feel like my life has gotten away from me lately. I'm glad to hear revising is going well for you, but sorry to having trouble with your various appetites. I know it's not easy when things are a mess, but you must take care of yourself. Sometimes it's just putting one foot in front of the other, only looking at that day and knowing that if you do what's best for you today regardless of how you feel, things will eventually get better.

As for books, you know I always have suggestions. I am continuing to add to my 12 Awesome Books read this year on this sidebar of my blog (I think I have around 10 now) and I expect the one I'm reading now will make it on there - THE VOW by Jessica Martinez. A really fresh plot and amazingly smart writing.

Anyway, hugs to you from afar!

  7. Eat Books! Eat Food!!

I recommend THE ART OF RACING IN THE RAIN by Garth Stein. I expected to not like it - it's told by a dog - but instead hooted and laughed in so many places... Such a great voice!

As for writing, good golly miss molly, I had an epiphany that would have been Handy a few months ago, but now requires a pretty serious rewrite. But I'm excited about it and it drives the plot nicely. So, typity typity.

  8. Hey everyone! I'm late, again. Mondays just don't seem to be a good time for me this month.

The last super great book I read was IN THE SHADOW OF BLACKBIRDS by Cat Winters. An eerily-creepy YA story about a young woman during the Spanish Influenza outbreak and the spiritualism movement during WWI. It's historical fiction, but told with a more current YA voice. Loved the main character. :)

This week's goals: to get some damn writing done! I'm so tired of always thinking about writing. It's time to put those thoughts to real work.

Yay to your six chapters!!! And all my best to you in nourishing your body and soul. (((HUGS)))

Sometimes great ideas become dated, and other times what you think is a great idea may not match up with the general Play Bazar
