March Madness Day 23

Sometimes You Just Gotta Do It
or
Butt-In-Chair

Now you all can see what I did yesterday afternoon and let me tell you, it was the hardest thing I've done in a LONG TIME. Don't get me wrong, I love dressing up as an alien and entertaining children, but yesterday I was absolutely not in the mood. By 2 pm all I wanted to do was crawl into bed and take a nap. I still haven't recovered from being sick plus I've had one of the busiest weeks ever. Pass me a tissue, right? We're all busy and tired.

So what's my point? Sometimes we must write, even when we don't feel like it. I admit that's been true for me at least 11 of my 22 writing days this month. But as you're all aware, if you wait for the "right mood" chances are you may never finish a project.

And just for the record, me and the kids ended up having loads of fun yesterday. Isn't that what often happens when we put our butts in the chair and get to work? We often end up having fun in the end.

Thoughts?

See you tomorrow over at L.S. Taylor's blog

  1. The act of writing is a funny thing. I think about it all the time, like nearly every moment of the day, but sitting my butt in the chair sometimes takes an act of Congress! I don't get it. If I want to write, why then do I constantly find things to occupy my time instead of writing? Part of me thinks it's self doubt. Who am I to think I can write a novel? I can come up w/ a zillion reasons why not to sit down and write, even when the desire to do so rushes through my veins. But in the end, when I finally put my butt in the chair, I feel, oh, so much better. I write, revise, and actually have a blast doing it!

Angi, I bet you (and Ace) walked away from the library event with renewed passion and inspiration! I bet you're glad you forced yourself to participate. May the experience give you the boost you need to march forward. :D

I hope these final days of March are successful for all of us! Nike's motto of JUST DO IT really is a simple concept. I think I'll make it my mantra for these last days of the MM challenge. Who's joining me?

    1. I think you must have good discipline, Candi, because it seems you've had your butt-in-chair a lot this month. I walked away from the library exhausted, but satisfied that I'd done what I could under difficult circumstances. ˆ_ˆ

  2. For me it had to be this one adorable goth teen at a Skype school visit who got up to the camera and told me, "I just got to say...LOVE YOUR BOOK!" She paused and added, "When will the next one be out?"

Or some teens who got all excited when they found out I was an author. Or another one that got a hold of a scene of a current project and did her own fan fiction piece on a couple of my characters as she really enjoyed what I'd written. And yet some other teens that at one booksigning that giggled and wanted me to sign their copies of my book.

That's what makes it worth it to me. Even when it feels as if I'll never go as far as some other YA authors but then again I have to remember this is my journey. Some writers get big deals/agents off the bat(not many but some do) while others, like me, take a few books under their belts to hone in their craft and voice.

I've gotten to Act 3 of my revision. The hardest part. So I'm almost at the finish line. Hope to push through to the end..

JUST DO IT is totally a fab motto for this last week. We all can do it! Si, se puede!

  3. I find live events exhausting but also inspiring. The thing that gets me there and gets me through them is that I'm talking about a topic I love (writing), and I do enjoy it even if it takes a lot out of me.
With writing, I'm so used to showing up at my desk that I do it regularly, but sometimes my fingers type faster than other times. Of course, sometimes I need time for my brain to put the scene together before I can write it--for example, a scene I wrote this morning came so haltingly, but it came at last. (That's what I get for changing a plot twist, so that now I have to rewrite all these earlier scenes.)

  5. Those of us who wait for the Muse to show up may never succeed with our writing. I'm a firm believer in showing up to write whether I feel like it or not. Mind you, when I'm feeling 'in the mood' I'll manage to come up with a whole lot more words than when I'm not. But either way, I'll still get words on the page. It doesn't necessarily start out as fun, but afterwards I feel better for having put some effort in.

This weekend there haven't been a lot of words... especially today... but Monday's coming. :)

  6. Congrats on the successful alien visit! I've no doubt the kids loved you! :D

I need to MAKE myself write more in this last week of March Madness. When I'm deep into a project, I've no trouble getting butt in chair, but in the early stages (like I am now), I can let myself fall into "waiting for inspiration" -- and that's not going to get me to my goal!

Sometimes, in order to be effective with Butt In Chair, one must also remember Head On Pillow.

  9. Tried to check in on my phone yesterday, but I guess it didn't go through. And I'm glad to say I stayed off my computer all day yesterday. It was a good thing for me. A breather.

Sorry you had to do an event you weren't feeling up for, Angelina. I have had to do a few of those and yeah, it's never fun. Hope you get recharged quickly.

  10. Yes yes on having fun in the end! I am having some trouble fitting in the writing. The blogging is going well and that was a choice as I continue to work on building middlegrademarch--BUT you are right just cause I am tired, sore or whatever...BIC it. It is either that or I am still in simmer and develop mode for the book and need to figure out a way to just get some words down at the same time. Thinking more and more on just pantsing it....

If freezing temperatures are never a concern in your area, consider a system that circulates water through solar heaters before sending it into your house. You still should keep your regular water heater as a backup because there may be times when there isn't a lot of sun or you have to use a lot of water that's hot.satta king
